Mid-October is the honest test of this question. The rain comes in sheets most afternoons, the rivers run brown, and half the lodges in Cayo are repainting rooms. Nobody puts that on a brochure. But the country is greener than it will be all year, and rates are at their lowest since June.
The answer is not a month. It is the window where the weather you want lines up with what you came to do, and in 2026 the numbers make that easier to pin down. Here is what the data says about the best time to visit Belize.
What Belize's 2026 Arrival Numbers Actually Show
Belize took in 905,466 visitors in the first half of 2026, up 4.6 percent on last year, but the headline hides a split. Cruise arrivals rose 6.9 percent to 586,925 while overnight arrivals barely moved, from 316,325 to 318,541. Cruise supplied 94 percent of the net increase, so if you plan to sleep in the country, read the overnight line.
March set the high point with 68,895 overnight visitors, 5.7 percent above March 2025. April eased to 48,808, May to 40,503, and June came in 5.0 percent below last June. The Belize Tourism Board tracks destination estimates across fourteen places, and every one of them peaks in the same month.
What separates them is how fast they fall. Indexed against each destination's own March high, San Pedro still holds 62 percent of its traffic by May, Caye Caulker 60, Placencia 52, Hopkins 50. Cayo falls to 43, losing more than half its visitors in eight weeks.
Two Seasons on Paper, Two Breaks Nobody Advertises
The dry season runs from late November or December through May. In Cayo, weeks pass without rain and the bush turns gold. The green season runs June through November, and locals prefer that name to "rainy season" because the rain is usually a heavy afternoon dump that clears by four.
Two rhythms matter more than the seasons themselves. The little dry, the mauger or magaña locally, lands between late July and early August: rainfall drops by roughly two inches nationwide and a dry westerly wind takes over for one to a few weeks. It is a mini summer mid-wet-season, at low-season prices. The second is April's iguana rains, short bursts that settle the dust as the heat builds.
Belize Weather Month by Month: The Short Version
December to February: Dry, Cool, Booked Solid
Daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s, humidity is low by Caribbean standards, and February is the driest month. Northers can push inland nights into the 60s. Christmas through Easter is peak: book flights and cave tours months ahead.
March to May: Peak Crowds, Then a Cliff
March is the busiest month of the year and the best weather-to-crowd trade of the dry season. April brings Easter week and the first iguana rains, then May pulls the floor out: 87°F afternoons, empty ruins, lodge owners with time to negotiate.
June to August: Green, Cheap, Better Than Its Reputation
June opens the wet season and the lobster festivals rolling through San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia into July. August brings the little dry, the warmest sea water of the year, and Cayo's lowest visitor traffic without the weather to match.
September to November: The Party Month and the Cool-Down
September is the rainiest month and the most patriotic one at once. October is wetter still. November is the turn: the rains ease, the coolest nights arrive, and prices stay low until Christmas. Inland nights can hit the 50s.
Rain is not spread evenly: the north and the cayes see 50 to 70 inches a year, and Cayo sits in the drier middle.
Hurricane Season 2026: The Quietest Forecast in Years
The season runs June 1 to November 30. In NOAA's 2026 Atlantic outlook, forecasters called for a below-normal year: a 55 percent chance of below normal, 35 percent near normal, 10 percent above, with 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major ones, against an average of 14, seven and three. The driver is a strong El Niño, which builds the wind shear that tears Atlantic systems apart.
Two caveats. An El Niño that suppresses Atlantic storms usually means a drier rainy season here, with drought risk, so a quiet hurricane year is not a wet green season. And as National Weather Service director Ken Graham said in May, it only takes one storm to make for a very bad season.
The 2026 Festival Calendar: Belize at 45
This year's September Celebrations carried a theme chosen from a public competition: "Look At Me. I Am Belize @45," submitted by 18-year-old Amber Mariano and unveiled on July 1 for the 45th anniversary of independence. The National Celebrations Commission built a two-week calendar around it, with heritage tours through San Ignacio, Benque Viejo, Belmopan and Belize City.
The dates worth pinning: the Carnival Road March in Belize City on Saturday, September 5, stepping off from Lord Rhaburn Plaza at 2 p.m.; St. George's Caye Day on September 10; National Service Day on September 19; and Independence Day on Monday, September 21, when Orange Walk runs its own road march. Love FM published the full calendar.
Outside September, the anchors are La Ruta Maya in early March, a four-day canoe race from San Ignacio to Belize City, and Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19, when Dangriga drums all night. The Belize Tourism Board keeps the running events list.
The Best Time to Visit Belize if You're Buying Land
The advice I give every buyer has nothing to do with postcard weather: come in the green season. Come in July or October, when a real downpour shows you how a parcel drains and where the water goes. A property that looks perfect in February can be a swamp by September.
The dry season is still better for what you will want to show family later. Cave systems like Actun Tunichil Muknal run clearer and safer when rivers are low, and some operators suspend trips after heavy rain. If cave tubing is on the list, the Caves Branch tubing guide explains how water levels decide your day. If birds are why you came, our Cayo birding guide has the species calendar.
The play: one dry-season trip to see the land at its best and walk the cave, one green-season trip before you sign anything. Our earlier season-by-season guide covers the coast and caye side.
Own 90 acres with its own cave in Cayo, Belize
The cave reads differently by season: dry-month pools you can wade, green-season water you can hear from the trailhead. Walk it once in the sun and once in the rain.
View the property →The short version: the best time to visit Belize depends on which Belize you came for. February gives you the driest weather and the longest lines. May gives you the same ruins with nobody in them. The little dry in late July and August gives you dry-season skies at green-season prices. September gives you the country at its loudest, rain and all. Pick the season that matches the trip, not the brochure.
